System Requirements
These system requirements are for a local installation of MS SQL Server on the same machine as PHDwin. These requirements do not support a local area network instance installation, a wide-area network instance installation, or hybrid cloud deployment.
Minimum System Requirements
Workstation
•Processor – Intel i3 processor or better
•Memory – 16 GB RAM or better (16+ GB is recommended)
oTo ensure optimal performance, increase memory as the size of the database grows.
•Hard Disk – 500GB SSD
oAs the size of your data sets grows, you may need to upgrade your hard disk
•Operating System – Windows 10 (64 bit) or newer
•Database Storage – Microsoft SQL Server or SQL Server Express
oPHDwin is compatible with versions 2019 or later
•Monitor – PHDwin requires a monitor with a minimum screen resolution of 1920×1080. Higher resolutions are recommended for optimal display.
PHDwin V3 Dependencies
•Microsoft SQL Server – PHDwin requires Microsoft SQL Server Express or Standard 2019 or later
oIf using a local SQL instance, backup folder location should have 2.5 times sum of databases used space.
oIf using a dedicated server for shared access, allocated free storage space should be 2.5 times sum of databases used space.
oThe full system requirements for Microsoft SQL Server can be found on Microsoft’s Website
•msodbcsql13 driver – must be this version of the driver
•Microsoft .Net framework – 4.8.1 or newer
•C++ 2015 Redistributable – must be this version of the redistributable
How to Improve the Performance of PHDwin
To achieve optimal performance with PHDwin, we recommend the following upgrades, in order of importance:
•Dedicated server for your PHDwin databases.
•Hard Disk – upgrade to a Solid State Drive for faster read/write speeds.
•Processor – upgrade to at least an i5 or i7 quad-core processor to improve the speed of economic runs. PHDwin’s economics engine is capable of parallel processing and efficiently using all cores available on the computer.
•Network – Upgrade to Gigabit connection to improve data transfer rates..
•Environment – If SQL is on a different machine from PHDwin, where possible, keep workstation and SQL server “close”, i.e. same physical network or remote into a VM in the same physical network as the SQL server.
•Memory – upgrade to at least 32 GB RAM to ensure smooth performance, particularly with larger datasets.
•Upgrade to Full SQL Server Recommended for data sets of more than 5,000 cases.
•Anti-Virus & Network Monitoring – Whitelist PHDwin application and processes.
Recommended Complimentary Software
Microsoft SQL Server or SQL Server Express(free version) is the only software application required to run PHDwin. In addition, you may want to install the following software:
•Microsoft Excel (2010 or later, including Office 365) – necessary to export reports to Excel
•Adobe Acrobat or another PDF reader/writer – necessary to export reports to PDF
•Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio – required for setting up login credentials for other users and maintaining SQL databases outside of PHDwin.
Running PHDwin on a Mac
| You can run PHDwin on an Intel-based Mac by installing Microsoft Windows. To do this, open up the Boot Camp Assistant which will walk you through the entire setup. Boot Camp is a default application on all newer Mac computers. For more information on exactly how to set this up, you can go to Apple’s website. Alternatively, you can install PHDwin on your Mac and connect to a shared MS SQL Server on your company’s server. Microsoft does not currently allow installation of MS SQL Server on Mac OS. |
