When you first create a database in PHDwin, there are a few items that you should set up before you get started adding new cases or importing data. All of these items can still be managed after you begin your project, but it can save time and effort to set them up beforehand.
Give Access to the Correct Users
If the database you're using will be on an instance of SQL that many people can access, you can limit the people who can get into and make changes to the database by setting up the proper permissions.
Create Scenarios and Qualifiers
You can create different scenarios to evaluate the same set of cases under different conditions. If this is something that you think you might use, you could create the scenarios with the proper settings and then add cases to them or manipulate the settings later. Even if you are just using one scenario, the scenario manager is where you can manage things like the date that reports will begin or the discounting settings.
Set Up your Phase Configurations
Before you add any cases in PHDwin, you should modify the default phase configurations or create any new ones that you'll need. You should choose these ahead of time so that they're readily available to use on the new cases you'll add or import. That way the product relationships will be set up exactly as you need them on each case.
Manage the Available Investment Categories
You can set up the investment categories so that you've got all of the correct options available when you add them to your cases, and so that they report as you'd like them to. If you're running an evaluation with income taxes, you can also set up how each category will depreciated.
Organize the Reserve Classifications and Categories
You can customize the available reserve classifications, categories and subcategories that you can set for each case. In addition, you can rearrange them in any order that you'd like. The order that you set up is the one that is followed when you sort your cases by classification or category and then run a report.
Adjust the Unit Conventions
You can set up the default unit conventions to be used on each case and also for reporting.
Set Up Pick Lists for Fields, Zones & Reservoirs
When you create new cases manually, you'll be forced to pick from the available field, zone and reservoir names that you've pre-defined in the Database Settings. If you're importing cases from a data vendor or a previous version of PHDwin, these will be created for you.
